Liebe Leser, das Schiff ist schon am 31.12.2009 aufgelaufen, wir waren an diesem Morgen gerade mit einem Taucherboot der Sinai Divers zum Woodhouse Reef unterwegs, um dort zu tauchen. Ein aufgebrachter Funkspruch kam rein und unser Captain sagte, dass dieser vom Containerschiff kam, das gerade aufs Riff aufgelaufen war. Eine chinesische Crew unter indischem Captain hat es anscheinend nicht geschafft, am Riff vorbei zu fahren und saß auf. Wie kann so etwas mit der heutigen Navigations-Technik am hellichten Tag ueberhaupt noch passieren??? Strafzahlung pro zerstoertem Quadratmeter Riff: 20.000 US-Dollar - aber das Geld hilft dem Riff auch nicht, sich schneller wieder herzustellen. Wir hoffen, die Bergung zerstoert nicht noch mehr dieser wunderbaren Unterwasserlandschaft! mfg, Lydia

Reports state that the ship has hit the reef along 25 meters of the bow section. That is also where the damage is. Let us hope the Egyptian board is strict and can take measures to prevent similiar stupid accidents.

Solar panels are expensive. Using a solar furnace would be novel, converting the steam and a turbine to run an alternator or DC generator. A lot depends on whether you want AC or DC, the voltage or current required are important, too.
