Geistermuränen, auch Nasenmuränen genannt, sind sicherlich die auffälligste bzw. faszinierendste Muränen Art.

Sie sind schwer zu finden, da sie sich meist im Korallenriff und sandigen Meeresboden verstecken. Oftmals ragt nur ihr Kopf heraus, den sie aber auch ganz schnell einziehen, wenn man ihnen zu nahe kommt. Sie können allerdings bis zu 1,2 m groß/lang werden.

Die wohl schönsten von ihnen sind die Männchen. Sie sind leuchtend blau mit gelben Flossensaum, Schnauze und Augen. Sieht man eine schwarze Geistermuräne mit gelben Streifen dann handelt es sich um ein Männliches Jungtier. Beim Eintritt ins Erwachsenen Alter, ab einer Länge von ca. 65 cm, erfolgt die Farbumwandlung. Interessant ist,  dass es später, ab einer Länge von ca. 95 cm, noch einmal eine Umwandlung gibt – diesmal sogar eine Geschlechtsumwandlung. Jetzt wandeln sich alle männlichen Nasenmuränen Weibchen um, und werden komplett gelb.  Diese bekommt man so gut wie nie vor die Maske.

Gestern hatten wir Vater und Sohn nebeneinander. Die Mutter war wohl gerad shoppen! 😉

I guess the Ribbon eels are one of the most distinctive and most colorful kinds of moray eels.

They are hard to discover because they hide in the coral reef or in the sandy bottom. Mostly only the head looks out of the hole but disappears immediately when you get to close. Never the less they can grow up to 1.2 meters.

The most beautiful ones are the males. They are bright blue with a yellow dorsal fin, mouth and eyes.

If you see a black one with a yellow dorsal fin it is a male juvenile. By the time they emerge into adulthood, at a length of about 65 cm, they change into that bright blue color. Now they are real men. 😉

What’s most interesting is that there is another transformation – this time not just in color but also in sex. When they reach about 95 cm they all become females. Isn’t that amazing? Now their color is complete yellow. You will hardly see those ones.

Yesterday we had father and son next to each other. Guess the mother was shopping at that time. 😉
