Laureia Siagiani

An animal which can often be found underwater around Bali is the pink squat lobster. It lives in the crevices of the large barrel sponge. It is very small and relatively shy though. It belongs to the family of squat lobsters and has 3 (instead of 4) pairs of walking legs. The “missing” legs are inside the gill cavity and are used to clean the gills. The lobster has a very beautiful color and is rather “hairy”. They can always be found together with the brittle stars. Have a look in the crevices next time.  By the way, the lobster, Laureia Siagiani, is named after one of the discoverers, the Javanese/Balinese diveguide Wally Siagian. Thank you, Heinz Güdel, for the pictures.
