World Clean Up Day

27.09.2019 – Blog Sharm

Trash in our oceans is a serious problem that threatens the marine environment.
For us divers, the marine environment is very important and here are some simple guidelines to avoid damaging the environment while diving and collecting rubbish:

– Maintain good neutral buoyancy.
– Touch only trash.
– Ensure equipment is attached and streamlined.
– Assess the environment before beginning removal
– Hold your trash bag so that nothing trails or touches the bottom.
– Dive in a head down position to avoid stirring the sediment or contacting the bottom with your fins.
– Work slowly and carefully.
– Work in a buddy team.

What to remove:
all plastic, clothing, bags, fishing gear (line, nets, fish traps), bottle caps, batteries, glass bottles, tin cans, cigarette butts,..

Do note remove any items that contain marine life!

What to leave:
glass bottles covered in growth, anything that is stuck or encrusted with growth, anything that has become overgrown with marine life, anything that may be dangerous or cause injury, heavy items, metal drums or containers that may contain hazardous materials,..

Team 3 “Shorouk” – With our guides Ali Hassan and Yulia. They cleaned the dive site “Middle Garden” and managed to collect about 3 Kgs of waste during the dive.

Well done everybody and thank you again to all participants in our cleanup, joining us in the fight against marine debris.
