Logbook 16.02. – 01.03.2020

14 Days Tour-Gaafu Alifu – Gaafu Alifu
16th February – 1st March 2020

It’s another trip for the Sheena this season. We are starting from Gaafu Alifu and coming back to towards Gaafu Alifu.

During this trip we will be visiting the following atolls – Gaafu Alifu, Fuvahmulah, Addu and ending our tour in Gaafu Alifu.

16 February 2020

Today our tour starts with 12 guests on boat, 7 from Germany and 5 from Switzerland.  They will all be arriving at Koodhoo domestic airport and later in the afternoon brought to the Sheena which is going to be their home for the next 14 day. Once arrived on boat they were provided with a welcome drink and a welcome briefing and later shown their cabins which later followed upon with a lunch. After lunch the guests had the opportunity to set up their diving equipment and relax for the rest of the day by snorkeling at the back of the boat.

Later after dessert a current seminar & a general boat briefing about the full boat was given and then we presented to the guests the itinerary we had for the next 14 days. At the end we had a crew introduction where the guests are introduced to the crew which ended with a huge round of applause.

Soon the guests started to head towards their cabin to get must needed rest and prepare themselves for the next 14 days of adventure.

17 February 2020

As the sun rose over the horizon the guests started gathering up eagerly waiting for their upcoming adventure. Ting and the bell rings for the first dive briefing which is later followed on with a Dhoni briefing and the check dive where the guests could check all their equipment and make sure they are weighted properly. They are also divided into three groups with Ved , Jacques and Florian leading each group.

Dive 1 – Viligili Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll) (Check Dive)
Dive 2 – Kuredhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 3 – Nilandhoo Kandu ( Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Viligili Kandu where we did the check the dive. During the dive we a school of at least 50-60 grey reef sharks all around the corner. A good way to start the diving adventure. For the second dive we visited Kuredhoo Kandu where we crossed the channel. While crossing we encountered a school of grey reef sharks, some eagle rays and a massive giant grouper. At Nilandhoo Kandu even though the current changed to outgoing there were plenty of reef fish and some massive green turtles to see..

Dive 4 – Nilandhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 5 – Vodamulaa Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 6 – Maarehaa Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 3 dives in Gaafu Alifu and enjoy the channels on the East side of Gaafu Alifu. Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Vodamulaa Kandu where the channel had some massive green turtles and the third dive we visited Maarehaa Kandu, where we had a small incoming current but the dive was full of grey reef sharks and during the dive around 18 eagle rays were spotted cruising in the blue. Dive 7 – Fuvamulah South (Gnyaviyani Atoll)
Dive 8 – British Loyalty Wreck (Addu Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 2 dives as we had to cross from Gaafu Alifu to Gnyaviyani Atoll (Fuvamulah) and do one dive in the South side of Fuvamulah and then cross towards Addu atoll and dive a world war 2 ship wreck.

Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Fuvamulah south where we jumped in the blue and drifted along to find a thresher shark. Once done with the dive we crossed to Addu and dived British Loyalty Wreck. A ship which sank in the year 1946 after it was torpedoed by a German submarine. The ship wreck itself was in a good condition with loads of hard coral growing on the top of the wreck and loads of fish life. A beautiful end to today’s diving

Dive 9 – Maa Kuda Corner (Manta Point) (Addu Atoll)
Dive 10 – Maa Kuda Corner (Manta Point) (Addu Atoll)
Dive 11 – Kuda Kandu Corner (Addu Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 3 dives in Addu and visit some highlights of this atoll. Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Maa Kuda Corner which is a manta point in the atoll.

During the dive we had a gentle outgoing current which brought these beautiful gentle creatures we love called mantas. For the second dive we visited the same site but this time where weren’t any mantas, but the divers encountered 3 octopus mating and one of our divers Daniel reached a 300-dive milestone. While for the last dive we explored the site Kuda Kandu Corner, As the current was going out, we were not expecting much but within 5 mins of that dive the divers encountered 4-5 Mantas cruising all along the reef. Dive 12 – Kuda Kandu Corner (Addu Atoll)
Dive 13 – Hithadhoo Corner West (Addu Atoll)
Dive 14 – Hithadhoo Corner East (Addu Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 3 dives in Addu and explore some the sites this atoll has to offer. Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Hithadhoo Corner west and east were the topography had some deep drop-off which was full of hard and soft coral.

Dive 15 – Fuvamulah South (Gnyaviyani Atoll)
Dive 16 – Fuvamulah South (Gnyaviyani Atoll)
Dive 17 – Tiger Zoo (Gnyaviyani Atoll)

Today the plan was to leave Addu Atoll in the early hours of the morning and cross towards Gnyyaviyani Atoll (Fuvamluah) and do 3 dives around Fuvamluah. Some of the highlights of today’s dives at Fuvamulah South was there were thresher sharks and a massive school of bonito tunas. While for the last dive at tiger zoo we had school of 50-60 silvertips and 4 tiger sharks. Leaving the divers in the state of awe.

Dive 19 – Fuvamulah South (Gnyaviyani Atoll)
Dive 20 – Tiger Zoo (Gnyaviyani Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 3 dives in Gnyyaviyani Atoll (Fuvamluah). Some the highlights of today dives were at Fuvamulah South where the divers encountered a thresher sharks and a oceanic manta while for the third dive at tiger zoo in the first 3min of the dive the divers saw a massive 6m whale-shark in the middle of all the 50-60 sliver tips and tigers sharks. WOW.

Just WOW. Later that evening the guests visited the island of Fuvamluah and witness the islands beauty.

Dive 21 – Fuvamulah South (Gnyaviyani Atoll)
Dive 22 – Tiger Zoo (Gnyaviyani Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 2 dives in Gnyyaviyani Atoll (Fuvamluah) and then cross back towards Gaafu Alifu Atoll. The crossing would take us 6hours+. Some of the highlights of today’s dives at Fuvamluah South was a thresher shark and some massive schools of bonito tunas. For the second dive at tiger zoo this dive didn’t disappoint the divers. We had 5 tiger sharks swimming all around them. Good Dive

Dive 23- Gemanafushi Outside (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 24 – Maarehaa Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 25 – Maarehaa Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

As the sun rose over the horizon it was time to go diving but now, we were in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Today the plan was to do 3 dives in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Some of the highlights of today’s dives were Maarehaa Kandu where we had a medium incoming current which allowed the divers to cross and witness schools of grey reef sharks and eagle rays. While for the third dive we visited the same site but over and above the things we saw before the guides also spotted some ribbon eels. Good day of diving.

26 February 2020

Dive 26 – Kodey Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 27 – Maarehaa Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 28 – Kodey Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Today the plan was to 3 dives in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Some of the highlights of today’s dives were at Kodey Kandu were divers saw some grey reef sharks, some green turtles but the real highlight of the dive was to drift inside the channel, the channel was full of hard corals, a virgin reef. While at Maarehaa Kandu we had a small incoming current, which made the crossing easier, but the dive had loads of grey reef sharks and some rays. On the dive the guide also spotted some ribbon eels and a leaf scorpion fish.Good Dive.

Later in the evening the crew prepared at the beach and special barbecue for the guests, which made the night even more memorable.

Dive 29 – Kodey Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 30 – Nilandhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 31 – Viligili Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Today the the plan was to do 3 dives in Gaafu ALifu Atoll. Some the highlights of today’s dive at Kodey Kandu where divers saw some sharks and the beautiful hard coral topography. At Viligili Kandu we crossed the channel and encountered schools of grey reef sharks and some massive green turtles. Beautiful day diving

28 February 2020

Dive 32 – Viligili Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 33 – Koodhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 34 – Fish Factory (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

As the sun rose it was another day of some outstanding diving. Today the plan was to 3 dives in Gaafu Alifu atoll. Some the highlights of today’s dives were at Koodhoo Kandu where the divers encountered loads of grey reef sharks. While for the third dive we dived the Fish Factory right outside the Koodhoo Fish Factory to encounter oceanic black-tips and wow they were beautiful what a sight to watch. A memorable dive and way to end the day.

Dive 35 – Koodhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)
Dive 36 – Koodhoo Kandu (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Today the plan was to do 2 dives in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Some the highlights of today’s dives Koodhoo Kandu were the just so many grey reef sharks and at the end of the dive some divers saw some dolphins while some saw a massive whale-shark. It was a sharktastic dive. Oncedone with both dives the guests washed their equipment and relaxed till late into the night sharing stories, experiences and beautiful memories of this prefect 14day tour.

Today is the day we say goodbye with heavy heart as all our guests will heading back home. A memorable 14 days of complete fun and some awesome diving. Until next time keep diving and happy bubbles.
