Although the lionfish is visibly gorgeous, there’s much more to this mysterious creature than its striking maroon, brown and white stripes, elegant fan-like fins and delicate floating tentacles. Native to the Indo-pacific region, the fish can be found on reefs as deep as 90m, usually feeding on other juvenile fish. They can reproduce even before they are one year old, releasing over a million fertilized eggs per year. Their natural predators are sharks, moray eels, groupers, cornetfish, frogfish and scorpionfish. Watch out for those spines, as they carry a toxin causing severe pain if stung.
