Ghost nets are a problem for the marine environment, as they float free until they get stuck onto a reef, in which case they suffocate the corals and fish trapped underneath. This one was so heavy that three of us were not able to remove it, rather we had to tie it to the boat to pull it off the reef at Kari Beru Thila. After a while we managed, this particular net is now removed from the ocean and won’t cause any more problems. As our captains noticed, this fishing net was not made in the Maldives, as it is not the type local fishermen use. It must have come with currents from somewhere else. Let us all remember that the best way to solve pollution is to avoid dropping it into the ocean in the first places.
